Do you have a problem with your weight? Well, people around me told me that I’m too fat, but I was actually more than just very skinny before that. Sometimes people called me a nutrient-less boy. Probably because of the effect of premature birth or something like that.

I was only eight months in my mother’s womb. So, even though people called me fat now, I am very grateful that I gained weight and am not skinny anymore. Alright, about diet.

I heard there are many kinds of them in the world. However, there are two kinds that attract my attention, which are paleo and whole30. What are they? And what is the difference between paleo and whole30? In this article, we will talk about that stuff.

Paleo and Whole30 Diet

Paleo diet

Have you ever heard the word “Paleo?” Well, perhaps some of you thought that it is a weird term or  some kind of tree. However, it is actually taken from the word “Paleolithic,” which one of the ancient ages were cavemen who wandered the earth around two million years ago.

So, the Paleo diet, or known as the cavemen diet, is a kind of diet that adapts the habits of our ancestors in the Paleolithic age. The purpose of this diet is to return the habit of cavemen, which is like eating meat from what they hunt and gather. It is different from the modern diet, where the agricultural system was developed.

The benefits of the paleo diet

Currently, because of food incompatibility, many people died because of illness and disease, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and many more. A lot of diseases attack humans in the modern age than in old age. Loren Cordain, the writer of a book titled “The Paleo Diet,” said that by consuming food as our ancestors in the prehistoric age, you will become slimmer in a faster way. Moreover, there is no risk of modern diseases, such as cancers, diabetes, or such.

Cordain also said that by applying the paleo diet, you can decrease your glycemic load. You probably can lower your weight without sacrificing your calories. Because, in this diet, it is rich in protein and fiber.

How to do the paleo diet

If you want to apply the paleo diet, you should eat natural foods. Processed foods are forbidden. For examples of natural foods are:

  • Lean meats
  • Fish (Fish that rich in Omega 3 is recommended, such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna)
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Eggs
  • Whole grains
  • Oil from fruits and whole grains (such as olive oil, coconut oil, and walnut oil)

Also, as I mentioned before, you are forbidden to eat processed foods, such as:

  • Milk
  • Wheat, oats, and barley
  • Legume (such as beans, lentils, peanuts, and peas)
  • Fine granulated sugar
  • Salt
  • Potatoes
  • Oils that processed a lot (such as canola oil)

You don’t need to count up the calories during the paleo diet. Why? Because by eating foods, like lean meats, fruits, and veggies, are capable of fulfilling your calories.

Whole30 Diet

Whole30 is a new kind of diet that appeared around 2009. The inventor of the Whole30 diet is a couple of husband and wife, Dallas and Melissa Hartwig. They are experts in sports nutrients, anatomy, and physical therapy. This diet became well-known by many people when the Hartwig couple launched a website about health and consultation service, Whole9. The purpose of this diet is to rearrange the body’s metabolism and fix the relation of a person with food.

The benefits of the Whole30 diet

The whole30 diet can be said to be a process of learning while eating simple and healthy foods, which are good intake for our bodies. This diet program promised many benefits. They could be repairing the body’s composition and better sleep quality. Even better athletic performance and the decrease of desire to eat sugars and carbs are possible in this diet program.

How to do the Whole30 diet

Generally, it is almost the same as the paleo diet. However, it is actually different. The difference between paleo and whole30 is there is no chance to indulge yourself in the whole30. For example, it is like an 80/20 portion. The 80 is the portion of healthy food, and the 20 is your main favorite food. This kind of self-indulge is not allowed.

For 30 days, the people who applied the whole30 have to stop consuming:

  • Rice
  • Corn
  • Oats
  • Milk
  • Nuts.

These kinds of food above can cause an unbalance of hormones and other disturbances in our body. The only foods that allowed to eat are:

  • Eggs and roasted veggies for breakfast (you can eat your dinner leftover too)
  • Salad in a mason-sized jar for lunch
  • Chicken and roasted veggies for dinner (includes sauteed veggies and thinly sliced steak with salad)
  • Carrots and celery sticks with avocado sauce for snacks (fruits and one almond nut is also possible)

It is true that not eating certain foods can have a good effect on our body. In fact, some people believe that sugars are actually poison to the human body. This can be indicated by how inflammation can be triggered and how depression can come. However, most of the benefits of these diets only apply to some people. Eliminating some of our food intake can be very unfavorable.

Eliminating some intake can trigger an unhealthy consequence to a person who went for a diet. Whatever it is a paleo diet or whole30 diet. Lack of nutrients, constipation, and internal bleeding are some of the few problems because of that. People who have a health condition can fall ill suddenly because of these diets. If you are not an addict of sugars and always eat healthy foods, you have no reason to do these diets.

As a summary, what is the difference between paleo and whole30 diet? Well, in the whole30, self-indulgence is forbidden, such as the 80/20 portion, where the 20 is your favorite food. You have to eat 100% healthy and not factory-processed foods. So, it is different from paleo, where you can do the 80/20 eating portion.
